August Sigma Event Scores Touchdown!
Awards were given and a motivational speech presented at the August Sigma event, held Friday, August 11, 2006. Former Ohio State University Strength and Conditioning Coach Allan Johnson gave an inspirational speech, and provided many humorous anecdotes, as well as some impressive championship rings, to an enthusiastic crowd from Dublin, Aurora, Phoenix, and Atlanta. Prior to Johnson’s speech, Vic Syracuse, SVP of Infrastructure Services, told a receptive crowd that CheckFree hit its Sigma goals for the fourth quarter and started the new fiscal year off right by reaching the goal in July as well. The quarterly success was due in part to having earned scores for Availability and Customer Support that were above the goal during all thirteen weeks.
Trying to win a National Championship in football and obtaining twelve for twelve in Sigma Quality, have more in common than you may think. Johnson pointed out concepts needed that apply to both: goals, preparation, positive attitudes, team work, the ability to overcome adversity and remain focused, communication, and defined roles.
Being a leader is important, but being a leader in title doesn’t necessarily make a good leader. “Don’t assume anything; teach others how to lead and recognize their individual and collective importance. Everyone is as important as everyone else,” Johnson said.
With his participation in fifteen post-season college football bowl games and three National Championship college football games, Johnson has seen what works and what doesn’t work in trying to reach the pinnacle, and can apply those principles to CheckFree’s Number One ranking in providing Electronic Commerce products and services. “Teamwork is key to success. If one person continually fails to do their job, everyone fails.” Johnson goes on to state, “Everyone always aims for Number One, in football and in business. Avoiding complacency and continuing to set the standard will help keep you at Number One. Basically, work hard today to stay Number One tomorrow; no one outworks or out prepares a champion.” Amusing personal stories were mixed in to put an exclamation point on the presentation. Johnson held the audience’s attention with anecdotes about being thrown out of a Major League Baseball Game while a trainer for the Baltimore Orioles and getting in the ring with a wrestling bear.
As we strive to meet Six Sigma goals for twelve out of twelve months in FY07, we will think of Allan Johnson’s “Game Plan for Success,” and how it applies to CheckFree’s goal of remaining the leader in electronic commerce.
